COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Mississippi University for Women political science majors made research presentations at the annual meeting of the Mississippi Political Science Association held at Delta State University in Cleveland.

The theme of this year’s academic conference, held November, was, “Cities, States, and Nations: Political Legitimacy in Crisis." Four MUW undergraduate students were among the 35 students who delivered their research presentations at the conference. Students at The W presented research papers written in their comparative politics class. 

Menuka Ban, a senior from Nepal, focused on Somalia’s status as a failed state and how the possibility of shared governance among opposing clans gives some observers hope that the troubled country may one day emerge from anarchy.

Patricia Hernandez, a senior from Columbus, presented research that challenged assumptions concerning the social health of Cuba’s society. Using statistics and indicators related to education attainment, health and other characteristics, she showed that despite the country’s economic struggles the government has been able to provide key elements of well-being to society.

Karen Lott, a senior from Leakesville, focused on analyzing the vocational educations track in Germany and how it has contributed to the countries economic growth, but may be exacerbating socio-economic inequality.

 Jasmin Fleming, a junior from Brandon, presented research on North Korea’s heredity authoritarian political system and how its new leader, Kim Jong Un, raises concerns about how inexperienced leadership will handle world pressure targeting the country’s nuclear program. 

 Dr. Brian Anderson, chair of the MUW Department of History, Political Science, & Geography, said, “It was a healthy experience for MUW students to get outside of the environment we have created for them here and interact with outsiders who may share the same interests, but come at those interests from a different perspective.”

Colleges and universities in Mississippi that participated in the academic conference included Delta State, Ole Miss, Mississippi Valley State, Jackson State, Belhaven, Millsaps College and Rust College. Also attending, were colleges and universities in other states and one foreign country.
