Summer Development ProgramCOLUMBUS, Miss. -- Mississippi University for Women students and staff will travel to Jackson to participate in the second annual Summer Developmental Program conference at Jackson State University Thursday, Feb.28.

This year’s theme is, “Developing Minds to Expand Educationally.” Lecturers and researchers from all academic disciplines and cultures, including athletic personnel, will be sharing their educational expertise in the fields of athletics, developmental studies and education.

Staff from the Center for Academic Excellence at The W will also present at the conference.

Kimberly Taylor-Gathings, coordinator of Student Retention Initiatives, will present “Making College U.” The presentation will focus on how students can make college a part of them by supporting students both academically and socially.

Claudia Davis, Student Success coordinator, will give a presentation titled, “Student Success,” which will focus on key elements that will help students succeed from the first day they enter college until the day they graduate.

MUW student representatives Anna Lacy and Taracious Carter, both sophomores, will share their experiences with students across the state of Mississippi about their participation in the Summer Developmental Program that was held in the summer of 2011.

“Anna and Taracious have continued to make successful academic progress, and also are active across the MUW campus. We are happy to have them represent our program,” said Taylor-Gathings.

The Summer Developmental Program Conference was formed to inform high school students, teachers, counselors and administrators about the Summer Development Program in the state of Mississippi. The program helps to increase the rate of students attending college, as well as retain them through graduation.
