Capt. Mary SlaterCOLUMBUS, Miss. – Captain Mary Slater of Mississippi University for Women was recently selected as the university’s 2013 Diversity Educator of the Year honoree.

She was chosen for consideration of the Mississippi Board of Trustees of the State Institution of Higher Learning’s Black History Month celebration. She was among 10 of the state’s public university faculty and staff members considered due to achievements in advancing diversity among their respective institutions.

Capt. Slater has dedicated almost 14 years to the MUW Police Department, working her way up the ranks from officer to captain. She served as interim chief in 2012 from March through October.

In her current position, she serves as shift leader while on duty, patrols the university, inspects university facilities for safety and crime prevention, takes reports of crime, injuries, accidents and other events, promotes public awareness of crime risks and prevention methods and other duties.

“I was honored to be recognized,” she said. “I felt proud to know that out of all of the people on campus who could have been recognized, I was nominated by my colleagues.”
