Ryan LakeCOLUMBUS, Miss. -- Ryan Lake, international vice president of the prestigious Phi Theta Kappa international honor society, will soon call Mississippi University for Women his second home.

Lake, who is transferring from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Jackson County Campus, will join The W fall 2013.

A recipient of the university’s McDevitt and Hearin Leadership scholarships, Lake will study biology at The W. Eventually he plans to practice medicine and attain a degree in law, which he hopes to use to run for a position in government policy.

At the suggestion of his community college adviser, Lake decided to check The W out for himself.

He did last spring at The W’s annual McDevitt Day, where he had the opportunity to interview with MUW faculty, staff and student leaders for some of the university’s most prestigious scholarships.

“I wanted to visit and see if it was a place I could call home for the next two years,” Lake said, noting the university’s hometown feel. “The campus makes you proud of where you go to school. It makes you proud of its history and heritage.”

During an ordinary week, Lake can be found working 20-25 hours per week as the shift leader at Smoothie King in Ocean Springs.

This week he is in the spotlight as international vice president of Phi Theta Kappa, Division II. The international honor society will host its annual convention in San Jose, Calif., April 4-6.

Lake has served as chapter president and worked to revamp the chapter’s induction ceremony, making it more of a reception to connect new members with current ones.

He is the son of Brian and Linnea Lake.
