Sister Clarice CarrollCOLUMBUS, Miss. -- When Sister Clarice Carroll retired as professor of obstetrics-gynecology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2010, she headed to Haiti, arriving just weeks after the earthquake that devastated the country to begin her work as a nurse midwife in Gros-Morne, a city north of Port-au-Prince where many earthquake victims migrated.

On April 15, Carroll will be the featured speaker in MUW’s annual International Series, this year focusing on Haiti. The Mississippi Nurse's Association, District 18, will make one contact hour of continuing education credit available without cost to nurses who attend the session.

A member of the Sisters for Christian Community, Carroll continues her work in Haiti with Medicine for Peace and will speak about the state of women’s health care in the country.

“Haiti has the highest maternal mortality rate in the Americas,” said Series co-director Kim Whitehead, “and, based on her own work in Gros-Morne, Sister Carroll will report on front-line efforts to save mothers’ lives.”

The event will be held at 4:30 p.m. in Nissan Auditorium on the MUW campus.  All Series events are free and open to the public.  For more information, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
