Smart StartCOLUMBUS, Miss. -- Mississippi University for Women’s American Association of University Women (AAUW) is hosting a campus workshop titled “$tart $mart MUW” to teach students how to negotiate realistic and fair salaries.

The $tart $mart negotiation workshop will provide students with the knowledge and skills to successfully negotiate their first professional salary and benefit package. The program is scheduled for Friday, April 12, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., in the Emma Ody Pohl Building Room 206. Refreshments will be served.

Studies have shown that multiple issues affect salary decisions and for women there continues to be a pay gap between their male peers, possibly because men prove more willing to negotiate salaries and benefits than women.

The workshop will include role-playing, discussion and lecture and is designed to be a “nuts and bolts” approach to salary negotiation.

The Columbus-MUW AAUW, Starkville AAUW, Phi Beta Lamda, Women’s Studies Teaching Circle, the College of Business and Professional Studies and the MUW Office of the President are sponsoring the event.

The workshop is free and open to all MUW students, but registration is preferred. To register, please contact Dr. Beverly Joyce at This email address is being protected from spambots.
