Plymouth BluffCOLUMBUS, Miss. -- Dr. Peggy Redshaw and Dr. Jerry Lincecum will discuss Columbus pioneer Gideon Lincecum as part of the Saturday at the Bluff program scheduled for April 13 at 1 p.m. at the Plymouth Bluff Center.

Adventures of Dr. Gideon Lincecum, frontier naturalist, writer, civic leader and self-taught physician in the early days of Columbus, will be the focus of a chautauqua-type lecture titled “A Columbus Pioneer Returns: Dr. Gideon Lincecum.”

Dr. Redshaw, professor emeritus of biology at Austin College, Texas, will present interesting sketches of Gideon Lincecum’s achievements as a naturalist, explorer and frontier medicine man.

Dressed in 19th century costume, Dr. Jerry Lincecum, professor emeritus of English, will join Redshaw in citing more of the insightful writings and opinions contained in the notes of his great, great, great grandfather. The sketches will be based upon Gideon Lincecum’s documentation of his movements from Georgia to Mississippi and finally to Texas, where he is recognized as one of the state’s most influential early citizens.

Copies of Dr. Jerry Lincecum’s book, “Adventures of a Frontier Naturalist: the Life and Times of Dr. Gideon Lincecum,” will be available for purchase.

The Billups-Garth Foundation is partnering with the Plymouth Bluff Center in sponsoring this program as a tribute to the late Columbus architect and historian Sam Kaye.

This program is free and open to the public.
