COLUMBUS, Miss. – The first day of summer will be here soon, which means outdoor activities in the heat. Mississippi University for Women wellness coordinator Marion McEwen offered several tips to stay safe.

“If you are thirsty, it’s too late,” said McEwen, who works at the Stark Recreation Center.

McEwen said to drink water all day and every day to stay hydrated, adding that foods such as watermelon and other fruits help with hydration.

For those summer days that require outdoor activities such as yard work or exercise, McEwen advised individuals to cover themselves from head to toe with light clothing, use sunscreen and wear sunglasses to protect their eyes.

In the event one feels light headed or dizzy, McEwen said to immediately find a cool place, relax and drink cool water. She also suggested applying ice packs or a cool towel to one’s wrist and neck area.

Weather awareness should play a key role in exercise routines throughout the summer. McEwen recommended adjusting daily outdoor workouts to the cooler times of the day or seek an indoor exercises routine or class that may be more suitable.

“Pulse Point Barre and hydrotone have been added to the Stark Recreation Center’s summer schedule as indoor recreation options," said McEwen. 

Hydrotone is an in-pool water workout that is designed to tone muscles and suitable for everyone. Pulse Point is a new class at the Stark Recreation Center that combines muscle-sculpting barre choreography and cardio.

McEwen has more than 25 years of fitness instruction experience and has been an adjunct professor for The W’s Department of Health and Kinesiology for more than 20 years. She also has served as the wellness coordinator for the Stark Recreation Center since 2009.
