Common Grounds

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Common Grounds, Mississippi University for Women’s new two-story, full-service coffee shop officially opens Monday, Aug. 21.

The café, which serves Starbucks’ beverages and snacks, as well as yogurt parfaits, fruit cups and sandwiches, has already attracted quite a bit of traffic during its soft opening.

“We opened quietly Monday at 7:30 a.m. As the day continued, we went from one to two people to 10 to 12 and it continues to increase. We found that there is a demand for coffee here on campus,” said Alan Johnson, director of food services. “The finished product has been well received thus far. We are still working out minor details, but we are very excited about the days to come.”

Store hours this weekend will be from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Starting Monday, permanent hours will be:
Monday-Thursday (7 a.m. to 12 a.m.)
Friday (7 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
Saturday (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
Sunday (2 p.m. to 10 p.m.)

The modernly-themed space roughly seats about 100 individuals. Booths, as well as common gathering areas and ample electrical outlets, are just a few of the amenities. Barstools overlook campus and there is patio seating near the courtyard.

“Having Common Grounds in the library makes our newly renovated spaces even more attractive to students, staff, faculty and the community,” said Amanda Clay Powers, dean of library services and professor. “We plan to be the heart of campus, and nothing warms the heart like a delicious cappuccino.”
