COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women’s Department of Health and Kinesiology is celebrating Women’s Health Awareness Week in October with presentations that empower women to make healthier choices.

 

“We have some excellent topics and excellent speakers lined up. As in past years, we are working with Baptist Hospital to bring speakers that can address topics of interest,” said Dr. Irene Pintado, associate professor of health education.

On Tuesday, Oct. 3, Steven McCorkle, assistant professor of kinesiology, will discuss weight strength training for women. The presentation, Women and Weights, will last from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Pohl Building, Room 206.

On Wednesday, Oct. 4, Katymay Malone, instructor of health education, will present a talk on “Menstruation: Facts and Fallacies.” The presentation will last from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Pohl Building, Room 206.

Obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Pamela Lacy will be speaking about the reproductive cycle and how it changes throughout the years, Thursday, Oct. 5, at a luncheon sponsored by The W and Baptist Memorial Hospital. The luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will take place in Pope Banquet Room on the second floor of Hogarth Dining Center.

Pintado said, “The aim of this observance is to empower women to make their health a priority and encourage them to take steps to improve their physical and mental health and those of their families.”

Light refreshments will be served at both the Tuesday and Wednesday presentations. The luncheon on Thursday is free, but tickets are limited and must be reserved in advance.
