COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Mississippi University for Women’s Common Reading Initiative will host a series of events focused on the best-selling graphic novel, “Persepolis.”
From Oct. 3-5, students are invited to participate in a panel discussion and viewing of the animated film, “Persepolis.” The graphic novel is the first graphic novel in the history of The W’s Common Reading Initiative.
“With the events scheduled for this week, we want to expose our students to the many facets of `Persepolis,’” this year’s selection for the Common Reading Initiative,” said David Brooking, director of the Student Success Center.
On Tuesday, Oct. 3 beginning at 1 p.m., a panel featuring Todd Bunnell, instructor of English; Barry Smith, professor of communication; and Ben Harvey, assistant professor of art history at Mississippi State University, will facilitate an open panel discussion surrounding the themes of “Persepolis.”
“Even though this novel takes place in Iran, it is, after all, still about a pre-teen/teen finding her own identity, something that is not altogether different than what our students have experienced and are currently experiencing,” said Bunnell.
On Thursday, Oct. 5, Van Roberts, professor of communication, will host the viewing of the animated film and facilitate a discussion in Cromwell 242, starting at 6 p.m.
The Common Reading Initiative draws on The W’s rich literary heritage and builds upon the university’s tradition of excellence in teaching to develop intellectual community among students, staff and faculty outside the traditional classroom.
