COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Department of Mathematics at Mississippi University for Women will host Sonya Kovalevsky High School Mathematics Day Tuesday, Oct.10 to honor the first woman to receive a doctoral degree in mathematics.

“We hope to increase high school girls' awareness of mathematics and to foster their interest in mathematics beyond their high school graduation requirements,” stated Dr. Joshua Hanes, associate professor of mathematics.

The one-day event will feature a mathematics competition exam and mathematics workshops for female high school students and their teachers.

The program will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 2:30 p.m. in Parkinson Hall.

Prizes, including W scholarships, will be awarded to the individuals with the highest scores in the mathematics competition exam.

The one-day event encourages young women to continue their study of mathematics and prepare for possible careers in mathematics-related fields.

“Maybe one day these young women will pursue higher degrees in mathematics and obtain jobs in STEM fields,” Hanes said.

Registered participants may check in between 8-8:30 a.m. in the lobby of Parkinson Hall.
