COLUMBUS, Miss. -- “Visions: An Anthology,” an exhibition featuring the artwork of six graduating art majors, will be featured at the Mississippi University for Women Galleries Nov. 29 through Dec. 14.
The artists are Ja’Donnieka Ballard, Dustin Bailey, Josh Edgar, Christopher Garner, Sydney Martin and Olivia Plant, who are applying for graduation with a bachelor of fine arts. The opening reception will be held Thursday, Dec. 14 from 5 – 7 p.m.
Ballard is originally from the small town of Hollandale, but currently lives in Greenville. Her area of emphasis is painting and drawing and will exhibit primarily non-objective drawings in this exhibition. Ballard’s future plans include either fashion design school or a master of fine arts program.
A resident of Amory and a graduate of Amory High School, Bailey is most attracted to the illustration side of the graphic design emphasis at The W. Upon graduation, Bailey plans to build a portfolio to apply for graduate study in illustration.
Edgar is from Ocean Springs and graduated from Ocean Springs High School in 2008. After serving in the military, Edgar enrolled at The W, where he focuses primarily on ceramics but also excels in printmaking. Edgar plans to pursue a career in studio art, with the option of graduate school in the future.
Another illustrator, Garner, is from West Point and graduated from West Point High School. He originally came to The W for the residential honors program. Garner’s aesthetic direction is two-pronged: sequential art illustration (story-telling illustration) as well as client-based graphic design. He hopes to eventually pursue an MFA in sequential art.
Martin is from Lafayette, Ind., and graduated from Central Catholic High School. She is pursuing a BFA in art education and hopes to teach art at a local high school. Her artwork features screen prints.
A Columbus native, Olivia Plant attended Immanuel High School. She came to The W from East Mississippi Community College to study graphic design. Her boldly colored designs are inspired by her travels throughout the South. Plant hopes to be a graphic designer in the Golden Triangle area upon graduation.
The Mississippi University for Women Galleries are open from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, following the academic schedule. The Galleries are located in Summer Hall on The W campus and are free and open to the public.
