Hamill

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women’s Dr. Teresa Hamill is the recipient of the 2018 AANP Nurse Practitioner State Award of Excellence by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

“I feel honored to be recognized for this award. Knowing that fellow faculty nominated me for this prestigious award, is very humbling,” said Hamill, chair of the department of graduate nursing.

Hamill will be recognized at the 2018 AANP National Conference at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, June 26-July 1.

The State Award for Excellence recognizes nurse practitioners in each state who demonstrate excellence in clinical practice and a significant contribution toward increasing the awareness and acceptance of nurse practitioners.

Hamill has almost 30 years of experience working as a nurse practitioner and continues to work in primary care within local communities and the university's health center. She has taught for more than20 years at The W for both the master of science in nursing and bachelor of science in nursing programs. Hamill was named chair of the department of graduate nursing in July 2017.

“Dr. Hamill is widely respected by students and colleagues as one who values the strong underpinning of nursing assessment, research and theory; combining those with advanced nursing practice knowledge and skill to deliver holistic care to patients,” said Dr. Shonda Phelon, assistant professor of graduate nursing.

According to Phelon, Hamill is a strong advocate for full-practice authority for nursing in practice, the classroom and with lawmakers.

“She is an exemplary professional clinician in family practice. She is one who is most deserving of the AANP State Award of Excellence,” added Phelon.

The American Association of Nurse Practitioners is the largest and only full-service national professional membership organization for nurse practitioners of all specialties. The annual national conference looks to provide expert faculty presentations of current, practical and clinically oriented evidence-based practice information that addresses the roles of all providers and patients.
