COLUMBUS, Miss. -- On Monday, Feb. 5, Dr. Jill Hamilton Clements, assistant professor of English at The University of Alabama, Birmingham, will be on campus as part of the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Speaker Series.

The presentation is free and open to the community and begins at 6 p.m. in 117 Parkinson Hall.

Dr. Hamilton Clements will present, “Crossed Bodies, Blessed Flesh: The Performance of Memory in Anglo-Saxon Funerary Inscriptions,” which examines stone funerary monuments and their relationship with rituals surrounding death in early medieval England.

Hamilton Clements works primarily on Old English language and literature, with research interests in medieval views of death and dying, practices of commemoration, and early medieval law. Her current book project, “Writing the Dead in Anglo-Saxon England,” examines the interplay of dead bodies and texts in Anglo-Saxon commemorative genres and in religious and heroic poetry.

The Medieval and Renaissance Studies Speaker Series is sponsored by the department of History, Political Science, and Geography, the QEP Committee and the Kossen Center for Teaching and Learning.
