Student with phone

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women’s mobile app has officially launched and is in full effect.

Anyone can use the app, but there are specific benefits for students. The app has a public interface and a private interface which is geared toward students.

Students can login to The W mobile app using their Net Id and password. This allows them access to their Banner account to register for classes, view schedule and holds, see a transcript, final semester grades and financial aid information. This is considered to be the private interface.

The public interface of the mobile app gives users access to the following features: alumni, athletics, directory information, emergency information, calendar of events, library resources, map of campus with building history, current news and social media links such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

“We have had a mobile app for years, but it only allowed access to Banner. This app is more functional than the previous app with the public interface,” said Carla Lowery, chief information officer at Mississippi University for Women.

Highlighting some of the recent developments made by the Instructional Technology Services (ITS) department, Lowery said, “ITS has been updating the campus infrastructure to be able to provide more data as needed. This allowed us to move the students away from the old Wi-Fi network that logged them out after a time of inactivity because bandwidth was limited. We were also able to create the new W Devices network that allows students to bring gaming consoles into the dorms. In the past this was prohibited.”

ITS also has been working toward a single sign-on solution for the portal. This would require everyone to login to the portal in order to access email, Canvas, Office 365 and Banner. Currently, students can get to most of those services outside the portal and they have different logins and passwords. A single sign-on portal solution would only require one login and password to access all those services.
