COLUMBUS, Miss. -- The Mississippi Organization of Associate Degree Nurses (MOADN) recently named Jessica Klark as the Outstanding ADN Student at its annual convention.
“There are a lot of amazing nursing students. It is just an honor to be nominated,” said Klark.
Klark was nominated by the nursing faculty at Mississippi University for Women for the guidance and leadership skills she has demonstrated in the classroom and clinical settings.
“I never expected to win. The audience erupted, and I was emotional,” described Klark about the moment of the announcement.
To receive the award, students must have a 3.0 or above GPA, demonstrate leadership potential and demonstrate both a caring and professional spirit.
“Jessica is an exceptional student who demonstrates the honorable standards of the nursing profession. She has a servant’s heart and has continually volunteered her time to help others less fortunate. Jessica always provides a nurse’s caring and genuine touch and is most definitely worthy of this Outstanding ADN Student Award,” said Dr. Adrian Sligh, assistant professor of nursing, in her nomination letter to MOADN.
Klark has coordinated and led numerous community service projects including a chronic disease health fair, Operation Christmas Child and assembled personal hygiene kits for disaster relief victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Maria. In addition, Klark helped organize a car wash to raise funds to assist NICU families with food and transportation and participated in raising over $1600 for the American Cancer Society.
Klark has maintained a 3.68 GPA and remained on the Dean’s list since fall of 2016 while also being a mother to three children. She received the “Spirit of Nursing” award in April of 2017 because of her clinical performance and professionalism.
The Outstanding ADN Student Award was established by the MOADN Board of Director for the purpose of recognizing a deserving student who demonstrates leadership, professionalism, self-direction, and excellence in the classroom and clinical environments.
MOADN is a state organization primarily interested in working to retain the Registered Nurse title and scope of practice for the associate degree nurse. The organization is also interested in working for nurses to have an easy transition from ADN to BSN if so chosen. In addition, MOADN works to assure quality health care for consumers by being involved with all issues concerning nursing.
