Codling

COLUMBUS, Miss. –Louis Codling became the first to graduate with a degree in theatre education from Mississippi University for Women during the May commencement ceremony.

“We are very happy that Louis is the first graduate in this pioneering program in the state of Mississippi and we are very proud of him. He will be an excellent ambassador for our department and our University,” said David Crater, chair of the department of Theatre. “Of all the students who graduated this spring, in all the colleges and universities in the entire state, Louis is unique in that he is the only one certified to teach theatre at the K-12 level.”

The Starkville native found his love for acting in middle school when he participated in his school’s production of “Annie JR.” Most recently, Codling has participated in productions of “Almost Maine,” “Lone Star” and “Taming of the Shrew.”

“There is something about theatre that makes it special. It encompasses all art forms. You get to let go and become another person,” described Codling.

The bachelor of arts program is the only theatre education program in the state of Mississippi. The program began at The W in the fall of 2015. The 124-hour program is composed of curriculum from three areas: general education, theatre art and professional education classes.

Codling remembers his set and costume design class most of all. The improvement and fun incorporated into the class made the experience unforgettable.

“It’s interesting here at The W. You get a lot of one-on-one time. The professors actually get to help you,” said Codling.

Codling will work with Summer Scholars for the upcoming weeks and will pursue a career in education in the fall.
