COLUMBUS, Miss. – The MUW Police Department and the Columbus Police Department will co-host training related to active shooter incidents for local and area responders on the campus of Mississippi University for Women May 14-17.
The hands-on training, which will be conducted by ALERRT (Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training), will focus on improving communication between law enforcement, fire and rescue, emergency medical technicians and emergency dispatchers during an active shooter incident.
The course also provides law enforcement officers with key medical skills based on tactical emergency casualty care guidelines, which can be used at the point of injury to increase survivability of victims.
Classroom training, as well as simulation and practical training, will be held in Shattuck and Taylor Halls.
“MUW PD and CPD have a good working relationship and co-hosting this training helps to strengthen that relationship. Communication between first responders is important during any major incident and this training will focus on communication during an active shooter incident,” said Randy Vibrock, interim police chief at The W. “The better we are able to communicate the quicker we are able to get the assistance needed to resolve the incident.”
All participants will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the training. The training is funded through state and federal grants. There is no cost for the participants or agencies that will be participating.
The Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center at Texas State University was created in 2002 as a partnership between Texas State University, the San Marcos, Texas Police Department and the Hays County, Texas Sheriff’s Office to address the need for active shooter response training for first responders. In 2013, ALERRT at Texas State was named the National Standard in Active Shooter Response Training by the FBI.
