COLUMBUS, Miss. – Owls Camp recently wrapped up on the campus of Mississippi University for Women with more than 50 youth participating in activities, including soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball and baseball.

The inaugural program focused on wellness as well as healthy snack options. It was put on by The W’s athletic department, the Office of Outreach and Innovation and the Passport to Wellness program.

“This year’s Owls Camp was a great success. With each day being a different sport focus, it allowed our coaching staff to emphasize and develop basic skills while keeping the kids moving and engaged,” said Roxanne Hernandez, head volleyball coach at The W. “I think bringing the campers into our facilities, letting them use the same equipment our teams use and teaching some of the same fundamentals that we do in practices at the college level is a great reminder about what’s important for us as coaches, but also great for both the participants and our student-athletes to be a part of.

“We are glad that our Outreach and Innovation department as well as the Passport to Wellness program included us and we look forward to further helping the youth both in and outside our W community through physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices,” she added.

Student athletes also were involved with facilitating the camp. Throughout the half-day camp, participants were treated to healthy snacks, including yogurt and fruit, cinnamon flavored tortilla chips and fruit and smoothies served from the Project CHEW trailer.

Renea Brandon, navigator for the College of Arts, Sciences & Education at The W, enrolled both of her daughters, Leah, 9, and Kelli, 7.

“I choose to enroll my daughters in the Owls Camp for the opportunity to explore different sports and to try healthy snacks from Project CHEW. The Owls Camp also provided them with an opportunity to meet my colleagues and our student athletes. They had an awesome experience!”
