COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Lisa Shrestha, who graduated from Mississippi University for Women spring 2018, recently presented her research at the National IDeA Symposium on Biomedical Research Excellence (NISBRE) meeting held in Washington, D.C.
NISBRE showcases biomedical research conducted by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences’ Institutional Development Awards (IDeA) program. The IDeA program funds 23 states and Puerto Rico. Shrestha was invited to present her research as part of Mississippi IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE).
Shrestha was the only undergraduate student from all INBRE funded research labs in the state of Mississippi chosen to present at the conference. She also was one of only 30 undergraduate and graduate students chosen nationally. The selection of students is based on their research projects and a recommendation by a mentor or professor.
“I feel honored to have been given such opportunities to present the research projects that I have worked on,” said Shrestha. “Being selected to present at NISBRE is a huge accomplishment for me. I am thankful for all of the opportunities that I received as an undergraduate at The W.”
NISBRE provides students the opportunity to work on their presentation skills, receive advice that could be useful in the development of their future careers and build their professional portfolios.
The goal of NISBRE is to improve research infrastructure and ultimately health in the 23 states involved, including Mississippi and Puerto Rico.
Shrestha’s research focuses on the CFTR plasma membrane protein and how mutations in this plasma membrane can lead to the genetic disease cystic fibrosis (CF). This research was done in the lab of Dr. Ghanshyam Heda, professor of biology at The W.
“This will expose our university not only at the state level but also at the national level in terms of the kind of work and training that these students are receiving here at The W,” said Dr. Heda.
Recent W graduate Shreya Ghimire also played a vital role in getting this research project national attention, while also working on her own research project. Limited INBRE funds only allowed for one student to be chosen to present in D.C. at the meeting held at the end of June.
Both Shrestha and Ghimire have excelled in their undergraduate studies at The W. Shrestha graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology. She will pursue a doctorate at the University of Alabama at Birmingham starting this fall.
Ghimire also graduated with a bachelor’s degree in the spring. She has received admission into a doctorate program at the University of Iowa.
