COLUMBUS, Miss. – The College of Nursing & Health Sciences at Mississippi University for Women has announced three new department chairs.

The individuals are Dr. Brandy Larmon, chair of the Department of Associate Nursing; Dr. Maria Scott, chair of the Department of Baccalaureate Nursing; and Dr. Kathy Shapley, chair of the Department of Speech-Language Pathology.

“I am so pleased that these ladies have accepted the challenge to lead their respective departments. They each bring a wealth of knowledge in their subject area along with many years of academic experience. I look forward to working with them in their new positions,” said Dr. Tammie McCoy, dean of the College of Nursing & Health Sciences.

Larmon has served as associate professor at The W since 2008. She is a member of the Mississippi Nurses’ Association, American Nurses Association and the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetrics and Neonatal Nurses. She holds a doctorate degree in education from Delta State University, masters of science degree with a concentration in health administration from University of Mississippi Medical Center and a bachelor’s degree of nursing from The W.

Scott, previous chair of the ASN department since 2015, started her career at The W in 2005 as an instructor. She was promoted to assistant professor in 2013 and associate professor in 2016. Scott serves on the Board of Directors for the Mississippi Organization for Associate Degree Nursing and is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing. Scott holds a doctorate of nursing practice with academic nurse educator concentration from Samford University and master’s degree in nursing from The W. She also earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from The W.

Before arriving at The W, Shapley was an associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and served as the national director of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association. She is a member of the American Speech Hearing Association. She earned a doctorate degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She also holds a master’s degree in educational psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a master’s degree in communication disorders from the University of Houston. Shapley earned her bachelor’s degree of chemistry from Stephen F. Austin University.

“I am thrilled to be a part of the Mississippi University for Women faculty. The W is committed to professional development and leadership opportunities for students and I share those same values. I understand the unique challenges of being a first generation student and the importance of having faculty who are willing to invest time in developing students’ skills,” said Shapley.

The College of Nursing & Health Sciences has more than 1,000 students and offers degree programs in nursing, kinesiology, public health and speech-language pathology. BSN graduates from the college recently boasted a 100 percent passing rate for the National Council Licensure Examination. In the same year, the ASN program posted a 95 percent passing rate.
