Dr. Mark BeanCOLUMBUS, Miss. – Dr. Mark Bean has been selected to oversee the completion and implementation of The W’s Quality Enhancement Plan, which is a part of the university’s current re-accreditation process.

Bean, who chairs the Department of Health and Kinesiology, assumed his responsibilities as QEP director July 1. Bean, with support and involvement of the university community, will refine and implement the plan.

The QEP is designed to enhance the quality of student learning and is titled “Cultivating Intellectual Curiosity.” The goal of the plan is to create a culture of intellectual engagement on campus. It is a major part of the institutional reaccreditation process by SACSCOC, the regional accrediting association of which The W is a member.

The QEP is due to SACS at the end of the fall 2013 term and will be formally launched in the fall of 2014, pending approval from SACS.

“We are in great shape with our QEP at this point,” Dr. Bean said. “It needs a little focus and for us to determine the specific student learning objectives we hope to achieve.”

Dr. Bean, who joined MUW in 1991, has served as department chair since 2005. He also has served in other roles on campus including special assistant to the president for planning and institutional effectiveness for two years following MUW’s last SACS visit. In this role, he chaired the committee that developed the response to the SACS recommendations.

He has served on many university committees. Highlights of his service include proposal of the B.S. in public health education program, implementing university-wide strategic planning processes and developing the majority of exercise courses now offered by MUW.

Two years ago, he was selected as the recipient of the Kossen Faculty Excellence Award. In 2006, he received the Mississippi Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Presidential Citation.

Dr. Bean is active and involved in the community, and he served as president of the Town & Tower Club. Bean also has served on the board of directors for the United Way of Lowndes County, Annunciation Catholic School and Heritage Academy.

He earned a doctorate in exercise physiology from The University of Southern Mississippi and master of education in physical education from the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Dr. Bean obtained his bachelor of science in physical education from Mississippi State University.
