Kid ArtCOLUMBUS, Miss. -- Summer is here and one way to keep children stimulated during the summer is to incorporate art, dance and theater.

Art comes in different shapes, sizes and forms, and it isn’t just paintings hanging on the wall, according to Heather Rowland, who said art may be found in music, math and history.

Rowland, adjunct instructor at The W and drama teacher at Cook elementary, devotes her time to teaching future educators how to integrate visual aids to help their students learn and youth how to be creative.

“Art is a way to speak without words and a way to communicate,” she said.

Rowland added something as simple as teaching a child fractions or geometry is a perfect way to incorporate art.

“Finding diagrams, 3-D figures or even sculptures can make it easier for kids to understand math if teachers and parents can incorporate it into the classroom or study time,” she said. “Some kids are visual learners and need that physical representation.”

When it comes to history, she said people have recorded history through songs, artwork and theater. It is also a way to connect with someone who lived many years ago.

There are many places around Columbus where children can begin to make their own connections and see art for themselves.

Sometimes art comes in the form of bricks and mortar or painted on walls, such as the recently painted mural of Catfish Alley on Main Street by W students.

There are several historic buildings around Columbus with beautiful stained glass windows and children can visit the local library to learn about its history.

Also, the Columbus Art Council and the Eugenia Summer Gallery at The W are two places kids can look at art work pieces.

Children also may attend the local YMCA and Boys and Girls Club to engage in music, dance and performance opportunities.

“It is important for kids to experience other things so they can have a well-rounded background,” said Rowland.

Whether it is taking children to dance classes, getting ahead on math or taking a walk around the city, art is all around us.
