Norgard

COLUMBUS, Miss --- Maddy Norgard, a sophomore majoring in political science and history at Mississippi University for Women was awarded a $1,000 grant from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi --the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

Norgard is one of 50 students nationwide to receive the award. Since its creation in 2001, Phi Kappa Phi’s Study Abroad Grant Program has awarded more than $775,000 to undergraduate students. In addition to these grants, the Society awards $1.4 million each biennium to qualifying students and members through graduate fellowships, funding for post-baccalaureate development, member and chapter awards, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives.

The selection process for a study abroad grant is based on the applicant’s academic achievement, campus and community service, relation of travel to academic preparation and career goals, a personal statement, letters of recommendation and acceptance into a study abroad program. Each recipient will receive $1,000 to be applied toward travel abroad.

Norgard will use the grant to study abroad at the University of Helsinki in Finland. She will be spending four months doing research at the Center of Excellence and Reason and Religious Recognition in Finland.

“I was very excited when I found out that I got the grant. I wouldn’t be able to go on study abroad if I had to take out any private loans,” said Norgard. “ For the first time I will be able to go somewhere and be fully focused in studying. I can immerse fully in the culture and my study while I am there.”

Founded in 1897, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Phi Kappa Phi inducts annually approximately 32,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni.
