Pre-law Minor
The Pre-law minor helps students from a broad range of disciplines prepare for law school. While there is no one major that is best for pre-law students, there is broad consensus around the importance of taking undergraduate courses that require rigorous analytic thinking, research, writing, and oral communication. This minor will help students develop those skills and abilities and develop a close relationship with one of our three pre-law advisors on campus.

Pre-Law Minor Requirements:
In addition to a required introductory course that provides an overview of the minor and law school admissions (IS 101 Law School Preparation), this 19-credit minor requires students to take courses in four categories of study. A list of the specific courses in each category and the pre-approved electives can be found in the bulletin.
- IS 101: Law School Preparation (1 credit hour)
- Logic and moral reasoning: Select either a course in ethics or logic (3 credit hours).
- Research and writing: Select one of three courses that focus on the method of historical and legal research and writing (3 credit hours).
- Legal elective: Select one of many courses that focus on the history of the law and the courts, or focused study of a specific aspect of the law (3 credit hours).
- Open electives: Select two courses from the pre-approved list that study the history, operation, and specific fields of the law and the courts. These electives may be selected from the pre-approved list (link above) or an appropriate course may be substituted with the prior approval of the program coordinator (6 credit hours).
