COLUMBUS, Miss. – Jasmine Spearman, legal studies major and first-year mock trial team member at Mississippi University for Women, received the award for Top Witness at the Big Easy Mock Trial Invitational.
The W’s Mock Trial team competed at the invitational hosted by Dillard University at the Orleans Parish Civil Court in New Orleans, Louisiana, Nov. 1-3.
“We are so proud of this year’s mock trial team and could not be happier for Jasmine. She has a natural presence in the courtroom and continues to improve throughout practice with testimony,” said Wesley Garrett, director of the legal studies program and coach.
The competition was a four-round invitational with the team having to prepare and present both the prosecution and defense sides. In two of the four rounds, The W played the prosecution. The W competed as the defense in the remaining two rounds.
Spearman, of Reform, Alabama, pulled double duty for her team at the competition, serving as a defense expert witness and as a prosecution attorney. Her witness performance earned 16 points on the judges’ ballots during competition to earn her recognition.
Of the approximately 150 student competitors at the event, Spearman, a junior, was only one of 16 individuals recognized as a top witness or attorney.
Spearman played the role of a medical expert and key witness, Dr. Lopez. Since August, she prepared for the role by making notecards and practicing with the attorneys.
When asked about the recognition, Spearman simply said she was, “still in shock.”
She looks to enter law school after graduating from The W with the hopes of becoming a judge.
“Mock trial is a course that will teach students, regardless of major, transferable skills in advocacy. Students involved in mock trial have to be committed because it is demanding- time spent traveling to competitions, practicing with your teammates and preparing your case. With the success, we have seen from the team so far this year, I cannot wait to see what the future holds, “said Ashley Chisolm, associate professor of legal studies and mock trial coach.
