COLUMBUS, Miss. -- When she came to The W in 1976, Susan S. Golden thought she wanted to be a photographer. An introductory course in biology changed not only her career goals but her life. She quickly decided to major in biology and minor in chemistry, graduating just two years later.
Inducted into the prestigious National Academy of Sciences in 2010, Golden is featured in a profile article in a recent issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, considered one of the world’s leading scientific journals. The profile accompanies her Inaugural Article for the publication.
The profile details Golden’s longstanding work in circadian biology and how the biological clock evolved. Currently she serves as director of the Center for Chronobiology at the University of California at San Diego. In addition to continuing her work in circadian biology, she also is working with UCSD’s Center for Algae Biotechnology to test whether the single-cell cyanobacteria she has studied in her research can be used as a biofuel.
Golden has earned a National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award, as well as a fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology.
