Scheduling a Proctored Exam Online or Face-to-Face

Students in online classes may be asked to take one or more proctored exams over the course of the semester. During a proctored exam your proctor will request to see a photo ID and will observe you and your environment during the test, either in person or over a webcam feed. The W provides access to face-to-face and online proctoring options and students are also welcome to make arrangements for face-to-face proctoring in their home communities if the prospective proctor fits the criteria laid out by their instructor. The cost for proctoring services varies depending on which option you choose, but please be aware that you will need to cover any costs associated with your proctored exams. The W uses Smarter Proctoring to help you locate a proctor and schedule your test date from right inside your Canvas course. If you have trouble with Smarter Proctoring you can contact them for assistance here.

Face-to-Face Proctoring Options

Students who live near The W campus may wish to take advantage of the FREE face-to-face procoting available for our students in the Student Success Center in Reneau Hall. To register, click on the Smarter Proctoring link in your Canvas course navigation menu and select the MUW Proctoring Center to view available dates and times. Please be aware that the W's proctoring center requires students to register at least 10 days in advance of their preferred testing date. If you have questions about the campus proctoring center please contact them at (662) 329-7138 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

If you do not live near campus, your instructor may allow you to choose a face-to-face proctor in your own area. This could be a university or professional testing center, a librarian, a military officer, or other trusted individuals. To locate a proctor near you click on the Smarter Proctoring link in your Canvas course naviation menu and search by zipcode. Please be aware that most proctoring centers charge fees for their services and that you will be responsible for paying those fees. Fees vary by location but you should be able to compare the costs for different centers in Smarter Proctoring before you make your selection.

Online Proctoring Option

Students who do not live near a face-to-face proctoring center or who need greater flexibility in scheduling their test time may want to take advantage of our online proctoring partnership with Lockdown Browser and Respondus Monitor. During an online proctoring session you will take your exam on your own computer at a location of your choice while being recorded over a webcam feed. You will need to have a strong internet connection, a webcam, and a working microphone and speakers to take advantage of this option. The built-in microphone and camera on most laptops should work fine for this purpose or you can purchase a separate webcam and microphone if needed. Detailed instructions about how to use Respondus Monitor with Lockdown Browser for online proctoring can be found at Support for Students Using Lockdown Browser with Respondus Monitor in Canvas.
