SEPCOLUMBUS, Miss. -- Put on your hat, sunglasses and tennis shoes because it’s time to explore. The Department of Mathematics and Sciences at The W recently kicked off its Science Enrichment Program at the Plymouth Bluff Center.

The program is a summer-long workshop for students third through eighth grades.

In the month of June, students in the fourth through eighth grades will observe “The Earth and Beyond.” They will learn about solar systems, galaxies and constellations by observing the night sky.

Campers also will get their hands dirty by taking a trail hike and observing the “Ecologies of Mississippi and the Deep South.” The nature hike will allow them to analyze bees, insects, plants and various types of soils.

Students can also research the impact humans have had on the natural habitat, which includes pollution, degradation and fragmentation.

In the month of July, gears will switch and turn toward mathematics. Students will be on the campus of The W during the week of July 8-12.

This time students in the third through fifth grades will pull out pencils and paper and have fun with fractions. They will learn the fundamentals on how to divide, multiply, add and subtract.

“In ‘More Fun with Fractions,’ my goal is to have the students comfortable with all the third grade Common Core State Standards-Mathematics for fractions,” said Dr. Bonnie Oppenheimer, program director and professor of mathematics at The W.

The program is fully funded by generous congressional grant dollars, which allow students to enjoy the workshop for free.
