COLUMBUS, Miss. – Guests will have an opportunity to hear from the Hon. Kenneth Griffis of the Mississippi Court of Appeals Thursday, Sept. 27 on the campus of Mississippi University for Women.
Judge Griffis will speak about the role of the appellate court in the legal system, recent changes in the law and his views from the bench.
The Lunch & Learn speaking event, hosted by The W’s Legal Studies Department in partnership with the Lowndes County Bar Association, will be held in Pope Banquet room, starting at noon. Networking/registration will begin at 11:30 a.m.
“The president of the Lowndes County Bar Association, attorney Amanda Meadows, and myself hope to use this opportunity to facilitate networking between the local legal community members and The W’s Legal Studies program. All area attorneys and judges from Lowndes, Oktibbeha, Clay and Noxubee Counties were personally invited along with students in the Legal Studies program,” said Wesley H. Garrett, director of the Legal Studies program at The W.
“My students have been very receptive to the opportunity to have `lunch with lawyers.’ We anticipate about 75 people attending this first Lunch & Learn. With the backing of the local legal community, I anticipate other events such as this in the future,” she added.
A native of Meridian, Judge Griffis currently serves as a member of the Mississippi Supreme Court’s Committee on Continuing Judicial Education. He has also served on the Supreme Court’s Advisory Committee on the Civil Rules, as chair of the Bench Bar Committee of The Mississippi Bar and the Committee on Electronic Filing and Case Management Systems. He is adjunct professor at the Mississippi College School of Law and the University of Mississippi School of Law.
Judge Griffis is admitted to practice law before the United States Supreme Court, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, the United States District Courts of the Northern and Southern Districts of Mississippi and all Mississippi state courts.
He is a member of The Mississippi Bar, the Magnolia Bar Association, the Madison County Bar Association, the Capital Area Bar Association and the Rankin County Bar Association. Judge Griffis also is a member of the Downtown Jackson Rotary Club and is a Paul Harris Fellow.
He earned accounting and law degrees from the University of Mississippi, and he attended Meridian Community College and Mississippi State University-Meridian Branch. He was a certified public accountant from 1984 through 2007.
