COLUMBUS, Miss. – Sixty-two students from the Noxubee County School District recently received hearing screenings by graduate students from Mississippi University for Women’s speech-language pathology program.

“At a young age, it is important to receive a hearing screening because you’re still learning language and how to make the proper sounds. If you cannot hear, it makes it hard to learn,” said Dr. Rachel Huber, audiologist and assistant professor at The W.

Five W graduate students visited Virgil Jones Jr. Elementary School, B.F. Liddell Middle School and Noxubee County High School this month to perform hearing screenings for local students. The five first-year graduate students were Emily Coggins, Holly Borntrager, Brianna Barrett, Sarah Daniels and Breanne Ducote. Huber and Lynn Hanson, speech-language pathologist, accompanied the graduate students.

Bontrager explained hearing screening as the first line of defense in detecting hearing issues. She said the test was as simple as “raising your hand when you hear a beep.” The students who did not pass the screenings were referred for further testing.

Huber added, “Students are in a classroom setting seven or eight hours a day. Their grades are impacted by their ability to hear.”

The five students found the visits rewarding, as well as challenging, giving them hands-on experience in in a real-world setting.

Traditional hearing screening start at age 3. It is never too late in life to receive a hearing screening, according to audiologists. Asking someone to repeat themselves, turning the television volume up, and difficulty hearing in crowds are common signs of minor hearing loss.

The MUW Speech and Hearing Center provides both initial screenings and full hearing screenings. For information about hearing screening or other services, contact the MUW Speech and Hearing Center at 662-329-7270 or visit: https://www.muw.edu/centers/shc
