Stomp Out Stigma

COLUMBUS, Miss.-- Mississippi University for Women’s Counseling Center looks to unite campus to fight mental health stigma with a night of dancing, singing and other forms of art.

In coordination with National Day without Stigma, the Counseling Center is hosting “Stomp Out Stigma” Wednesday, Oct. 10 in Nissan Auditorium from 7-10 p.m.

“We need to stand as a university and say it is OK to seek help. Treatment works. Seek it! It’s here on campus and it is free for all students,” said Rob’Dreka Shaw, W Counseling Center counselor.

Audacity Dance Club, Dancing Diamonds, Elite Model Squad, Gay-Straight Alliance, Nepalese Student Association and the Student Government Association, as well as the Maskers and Silhouette social clubs have registered to perform.

“Doing anything to eliminate the shame and discrimination around mental health is very important for two reasons. One, we know that suicide rates among young adults are higher than any other age group. Two, there are plenty of students who are struggling silently who don’t seek help because they are ashamed of being labeled or called crazy,” explained Shaw.

The National Day Without Stigma is a day designed to eliminate the shame and discrimination surrounding mental health disorders by creating communities of understanding, support and help-seeking.
