The Cage

COLUMBUS, Miss.-- Uncaged Functional Fitness is returning to Mississippi University for Women.

The popular coached workout sessions that train cardiovascular and muscular systems will return on Tuesday, July 5, to “The Cage” in the Stark Recreation Center. Associate Director of Wellness and Aquatics Ryder Williams, a 2018 graduate of The W, will lead the classes that will be open to participants of all fitness levels.

“I think it’s important that The W is bringing back UnCaged Functional Fitness because of what we can offer our community,” said Williams, who served as a functional fitness trainer for The W’s first iteration of Uncaged Functional Fitness in 2019. Classes are open to The W students, staff & faculty and members of community and will be at 6:30 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. They will be held in “The Cage,” which was previously a racquetball court and features a rubberized and turf flooring with squat racks, wall balls, kettlebells, rowing machines and more.

Williams is a certified CrossFit trainer, Mississippi National Guard Medical sergeant and nationally registered EMT. He served as a strength and conditioning coach at the Stark Recreation Center from January 2019 through 2020. In that time, he helped lead multiple sessions of Uncaged Functional Fitness that featured body-weight exercises, barbell work, gymnastic movements and much more. He said he became a trainer to use physical fitness to help people change their lives, which is why he is excited about the return of Uncaged Functional Fitness.

“Physically we see people hit goals they never thought were possible and we see people literally add years to their life because they are getting their blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes or whatever pain they feel under control,” Williams said. “Mentally we see people better able to deal with stress and opposition in their daily lives. At the end of the day, it’s just a whole lot of fun.

“We have some great coaches here who enjoy what they do, and we want to see people succeed. I would challenge anyone to try our class for 90 days and tell us their physical and mental health didn’t improve.”

There are four ways you can get involved with Uncaged Functional Fitness. A monthly membership costs $50 and comes with unlimited access to classes and SugarWOD, a CrossFit Official App that allows gyms and athletes to get workout of the day information and individuals to track their fitness progress. The Uncaged Daily Drop-In option allows individuals to pay $10 to attend any class, but it doesn’t include access to SugarWOD.

The other two options are the UnCaged Pay-2-Play, which is $125 for 20 visits and allows individuals to attend any class without access to SugarWOD, and the UnCaged Four-Week Package, which is $55 and has participants select a specific class time (no substitutions) and doesn’t offer access to SugarWOD.
