COLUMBUS, Miss.-- Mississippi University for Women’s Dr. Ghanshyam Heda received the John Martin Second Timers Award at the Human Anatomy & Physiology Society’s 36th-annual conference May 25-29 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The $500 travel award, which helped fund Heda’s trip to the conference, asked applicants to write an essay about why they wanted to attend the conference, to write a workshop proposal that can be useful in teaching in this subject and a letter or recommendation.
Heda, who is a professor of Biology at The W, led a 40-minute workshop entitled “An Engaging Activity for Human A&P Laboratory” for Human Anatomy & Physiology professors from throughout the country. Heda said 25-30 professors attended the workshop and 30-minute question-and-answer session were designed to introduce a simple learning method where students can take part individually or in groups using traditional blackboard, transparencies and an overhead projector under dim light. The teaching practice can help students remember anatomical structures with complex terminology.
Heda said at least two professors told him they were going to implement the practice in their labs, while a professor from Vincennes University (Indiana) asked him to send him a YouTube link of the presentation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8AHgPAVU8U).
“I am thankful to Dr. Joshua Hanes, associate professor of mathematics in our department for providing me with this idea during a hallway discussion several years ago,” Heda said. “I have used this particular group coloring activity at The W for many years.”
Heda also thanked Dr. Blanca Simmons-Diez, an instructor of biology at The W, for supporting his essay and workshop idea for the conference with a letter of recommendation.
This was the second time Heda attended the annual conference. He first attended it in 2016.
Heda has primarily taught Human Anatomy & Physiology I and II for majors at The W since 2008. He recently prepared and started teaching Introduction to Human A&P to non-science majors.
