Speech-language pathologists specialize in the screening, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of human communication disorders. They work in a variety of professional settings, such as public and private schools, hospitals, universities, nursing homes, other health care facilities, and in private practice. They work with persons of all ages, from infancy to the elderly.

Pre-Professional Undergraduate Program

The speech-language pathology undergraduate program is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of normal and disordered communication as preparation for entrance into graduate school. The program requires majors to have a scientific knowledge base for good decision making skills. The undergraduate program is considered a pre-professional program; it lays the foundation for the master's program, which is required for independent professional practice.

Graduate Program

The Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology graduate program enables students to develop professional knowledge and clinical skills.

Traditional and non-traditional students will demonstrate leadership, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities professionally and competently in a variety of clinical settings. The graduate program offers a Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology.

Important Information about Programs Leading to Professional Licensure Pertaining to Non-Mississippi Residents

Each state has its own licensing board with its own speech-language pathology licensure requirements. Although the master’s degree program in Speech Language Pathology at Mississippi University for Women is fully accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, thereby making its graduates eligible for national certification (CCC-SLP) and professional licensure in the state of Mississippi, we cannot confirm that the program meets the requirements for professional licensure in another state.

This program trains students to meet the knowledge outcomes and skills competencies, including academic and preprofessional clinical requirements for certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Applicants to The W must understand that, if admitted, situations involving life changes or shifts (e.g.,relocation, personal transitions, leave requests, decisions to decline clinical placement) while in the program may occur. These situations may impact the student’s eligibility for continuous academic program progression (i.e., limited distance learning availability) and/or participation in clinical practicum (i.e., experiential learning) and may delay graduation.
