COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women’s masters in speech-language pathology program was recently ranked highest in the state by an online publishing group.

The website,, recognized The W for its 14:1 student-teacher ratio and affordable tuition for in-state students.

“What is especially rewarding about this speech pathology graduate programs ranking is that it puts heavy emphasis on student outcomes and recognizes the success of students,” said Joy Townsend, interim department chair and instructor of speech-language pathology. “The primary purpose of The W’s SLP graduate program is to prepare young professionals for the workplace and this ranking is an indicator and recognition of success.”

The online ranking found that student-instructor face time that comes as a result of the 14:1 ratio contributes to the fact that 100 percent of W students have historically passed the Praxis exam on their first attempt and landed a job they love within three months of graduating.

“This ranking would not have been possible without the quality work and efforts of the graduate students. Our students rise to the challenge, as demonstrated by student outcome data over the last 10 years,” said Townsend. “And, student success is led by an outstanding faculty. This faculty works extremely hard to provide the best education possible for these students.”

The ranking also noted that the university has been ranked as a top Southern public master’s university by U.S. News & World Report.

Praxis pass rates, average annual tuition and student outcomes were assessed by the website when reviewing more than 240 programs from across the country. is a self-funded online publishing group that provides future and practicing SLPs with a dedicated resource. The online resource strives to provide unbiased information prospective graduate students and professionals need to make informed decisions about career preparation and advancement.
