COLUMBUS, Miss.—The Department of Music at Mississippi University for Women has developed a new curricular track within its current Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree: a Bachelor of Music in Music Education (Instrumental/Band). This program is intended for students who are interested in teaching instrumental music and band in the K-12 school setting.
“We are excited to offer this additional curricular option to our students and look forward to hearing about the impact our music graduates will have on the field of education in our region and the world. Our state has a strong band and instrumental tradition and we are thrilled to contribute even further to the growth of music education in our community,” said Dr. Julia Mortyakova, chair of the Department of Music.
The new curriculum was designed in response to prospective student interest and will serve to strengthen The W’s already prominent music education program, which previously focused on vocal/choral music education. The vocal/choral track will continue being offered. Recent graduates in the vocal/choral existing track lead successful careers as educators throughout the US and abroad.
The new program was recently approved by the music accrediting body, National Association of the Schools of Music (NASM), the final step in the degree creation process of the past two years.
Music scholarships are available for qualified music majors. Prospective music students should contact the Department of Music regarding audition information https://www.muw.edu/music.
