COLUMBUS, Miss. – Summer is approaching and with it comes temperatures that can reach dangerous heights. While it is important to keep up a regular fitness routine, it is just as important to take the heat into consideration.

Mississippi University for Women wellness coordinator Marion McEwen offers several tips on how to safely exercise during the summer months.

“Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate,” she said. “Hydrate before you workout, during your workout and after your workout. Nowadays there are all types of after-workout drinks, but you need to know what’s in them.”

She said that water is always the best option to stay hydrated. Also, it is best to avoid beverages that are high in caffeine and alcohol. McEwen added that there are certain types of food individuals can eat to help replenish themselves after a workout.

“Fruits and vegetables are always good but especially after you work out,” said McEwen. “Foods such as lettuces and especially watermelon are ideal to eat after a workout.”

When working out or working outside, McEwen said that morning is the best option because it is usually the coolest part of the day. She said that anytime outside work needs to be done, it is best to be prepared.

“The clothes you need to wear need to be lightweight, loose and light in color,” said McEwen. “You obviously don’t need to go work outside wearing dark clothing. And always apply sunscreen. Then reapply it if you are going to be outside for an extended period of time.”

McEwen also noted that your body will let you know when it is time to slow down. Anytime one feels lightheaded or dizzy, it’s time to go inside. When sweating a lot, dehydration is always a possibility, especially if not properly hydrated before going outside.
