First Black SGA President

In 2002, Phillip “Flapp” Cockrell was elected the President of the Student Government Association — the first black student to hold the title.  In 2003, he received the MUW Spirit Award and the Henry L. Whitfield Man of the Year Award.  He was also the recipient of the State of Mississippi Social Action Award.  Cockrell was a member of the Alpha Omicron Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, where he served as President and Secretary. 

Cockrell earned his Ph.D. from Jackson State University.  In 2016, he became the Associate Vice-President and Dean of Students at The University of Toledo.
